It was mid-2009 when Apple introduced the 3GS. This doubled data speeds with the introduction of full 7.2MBps HSDPA and improved processor power. It also doubled available memory, as well as improving the camera - at last (although nowhere near as much as it needed to be improved). By now, Apple had pretty much finished off its historical competitor, Nokia (until the latter's relaunch with Windows Phone). But a new threat had emerged - Android. Google's operating system, launched in October 2008, was creating cheaper smartphones that not only grew the market for touchscreens in the developing world but was beginning to rival Apple at the high end too...
